This & That Junk Drawer Wednesday!~Recipes For "Feathers & Furs"

Hello everyone!...Do you have a burning desire to waste a minute and a half of your life?...Find some good nutritious recipes for the Birds & Dogs...Well then… never let it be said that we here at Oodlekadoodle Primitives are not accommodating!!

Recipes For Our Furry Friends:

I found out my dogs don't care if they are shaped...so I just use a cookie dough scooper, scoop out a ball of the dough, & flatten it with a floured or greased fork, like I do our Peanut Butter Cookies!!

BEEFY BACON BISCUITS:

1 10oz. can beef consomme
3 tbsp. bacon fat
4 cups whole wheat flour
1/3 cup powdered milk
3/4 tsp baking powder
1 egg beaten

Combine dry ingredients. Add remaining ingredients. Mix well and knead.
Roll out 1/4 inch thick and cut with cookie cutter. Place on greased cookie
sheet. Prick with fork. Bake for 40 minutes and 375 degrees F. Leave in oven at
lowest temperature to harden (at least 2 hours)

PEANUT BUTTER BISCUITS:

4 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups oatmeal
1/2 to 3/4 cup chunky peanut butter
2 1/2 cups hot water

Mix all ingredients, adding more hot water if dough is too sticky. Knead well. Roll out to 1/4" and cut into shapes with cookie cutter. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Turn off heat and let cool in oven overnight:

CHEESE AND GARLIC DOG COOKIES:

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/4 cups grated cheddar cheese
1/4 pound corn oil margarine
1 clove garlic, crushed
pinch of salt

Grate the cheese and let stand until it reaches room temperature. Cream
the cheese with the softened margarine, garlic, salt, and flour. Add enough milk
to form into a ball. Chill for 1/2 hour. Roll onto floured board. Cut into shapes
and bake at 375 for 15 minutes or until slightly brown, and firm. Makes 2 to 3
dozen, depending on size..I let mine sit in the turned off oven till hard...

Remember you will need to store the Cheese & Garlic and the Beef & Bacon Biscuits in the Fridge....

Recipes For Our Feathered Friends:

Birds seem to like this suet much better than the store bought variety. Some won't even come to the feeder if this suet isn't there...I have 5 different woodpeckers that love this suet, and 2 that stay around all year. The Chickadees & Nuthatches also love it!

Success Suet:

1 cup lard
1 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/3 cup sugar
1 cup whole wheat flour, Cream of Wheat or oatmeal
2 cups yellow cornmeal
Optional: raisins, sunflower seeds (w/o shells), cut up dried fruit, or boiled egg shells

Melt lard and peanut butter. Add the other ingredients. Mix well, put into a square pan and put into fridge till harden...Cut into squares and put into freezer...

Marvelous Mix:

Peanut butter is an excellent and readily available food for our feathered friends....It is most economical bought in bulk...birds aren't picky about brands...

1 cup peanut butter
1 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup white flour
4 cups yellow cornmeal ( yellow is higher in vitamin A)
Mix it all together and press into the holes of a suet log. Store the rest in a plastic bag in the fridge.
This makes a soft, doughy food...This comes highly recommended as a food for wintering birds...
I fed this to my birds in my feeding station all winter and they loved it and of course so did the squirrels...

Start offering nesting materials..

Fill an old suet feeder with white cotton batting, pillow feathers, hair clippings, strips of paper from the shredder and cotton twine....Ask the butcher for one of those elastic bags they put the deboned roasts in and use it to fill up with your goodies...I also gather very small twigs for them to use and I like to use colored yarn so you can spot the nests easier..
.
The first part of April start putting the grape jelly out for those beautiful orioles...also a halved orange, skewered in a hanging feeder or on a nail acts as a beacon for Orioles..
.
and if you live in the warm part of the country be sure to fill up the Humming Bird Feeders with 1 part sugar to 4 parts water and boil it briefly before cooling and storing in the refrigerator....

Thanks for the recipes, I'm sure our two dogs (both rescues) will enjoy them, and the birds, well I hope these will attract more cardinals to my feeders.
